A note from our President

Welcome to the 2019-2020 edition of Computers & Law, the Journal for the Australian and New Zealand Societies for Computers and the Law, and the official journal of the newly launched Australian Society for Computers and Law (AUSCL).

AUSCL was officially launched in July 2020 by our patron the Hon Justice Michael Kirby, who was joined by many distinguished guests, including the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation Francis Gurry, Professor Jeannie Paterson from Melbourne Law School, Dr Jed Horner, Strategic Advocacy Manager at Standards Australia, and the co-founders of the Victorian and NSW Societies Julian Burnside QC and Professor Graham Greenleaf.

This year, AUSCL will be celebrating 40 years since the first Society for Computers and Law was formed in Australia by Julian Burnside QC together with other visionary founders. We hope you will join us for those celebrations.

AUSCL is proudly an Australian registered charity with a mission to advance education and to advocate for the rule of law, justice and the public interest at the intersection of law, technology and society. To achieve this mission, we run public webinars on cutting edge issues, conduct workshops and expert roundtable discussions and make submissions to government reviews through our Policy Lab. Our members form a multi-disciplinary network of professionals, business and civil society leaders, government officials, academics, members of the bar and judiciary, as well as students and the general public, all with a passion for informed discussion and debate on issues that matter.

This journal plays a critical part in achieving our mission. My congratulations and personal thanks to all contributors and our 2020 editorial board: Adjunct Associate Professor Peter Dombkins, Professor Natalie Stoianoff, Dalvin Chien, Jacob Lancaster and Tomas Kemmery, as well as our 2019 editors Daniel Thompson and Isaac Lin.
