Abstract/Description:

The activities of the European Union Forum of Judges for the Environment (EUFJE) should be seen against the background of the Judges Programme of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). Indeed, UNEP and the South African Constitutional Court organised, as a parallel event to the world Summit on Sustainable Development, in Johannesburg from 18 to 20 August 2002, a Global Judges Symposium on the Role of Law and Sustainable Development, after UNEP had organized in the years before several regional Judges Symposia in different parts of the world (Mombasa (1996), Colombo (1997), Manila (1999), Mexico City (2000), Castries (2001), Brisbane (2002)). The Global Judges Symposium, attended by some 70 Justices from all over the world, including some 30 Chief Justices and representatives from some international courts, was believed to be the largest gathering so far of senior judges to discuss environmental and development issues, and unanimously adopted after two days of intensive dialogue ‘The Johannesburg Principles on the Role of Law and Sustainable Development’, that are available in the six UN official languages.
