Abstract/Description:

It is projected that the majority of urban population growth in the next quarter of a century will occur in developing countries. Increasing numbers of people, assets, infrastructure and other types of wealth will, therefore, be located in cities. Unfortunately, these cities are likely to face additional stressors from future climate extremes. Ports may face higher exposure to extreme hazards, with one of the likely scenarios being exposure to sea level rise (SLR), but their general level of climate preparedness may be low and the degree of their vulnerability varies greatly. Research communities over the last 20 years have been focusing on mega citiesand primary cities and the mega-risks they may be exposed to. Recently, however, the Rockefeller Foundation has initiated a new focus on secondary cities in Asia such as India, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. Unfortunately, there is still little research being done on the secondary cities even though it is clear that some of them will be transformed into ‘mega’ cities within this century. It is suggested that building resilience into these current secondary cities might help reduce their vulnerability to disaster as they become the future mega cities.
