Abstract/Description:
The analysis of the role of health in international law confirms the working assumptions underlying the book with regard to the fragmented and diverse nature of global health law and the narrow core of dedicated treaty law on health. The increasing globalization of health and the complex interactions between international legal and governance regimes on the one hand and health as a normative value on the other hand, have awakened scholarly and policy interest on the international regulation of health issues and led, in particular, to proposals for new health treaties addressing a number of serious global health challenges. The absence of political interest on those proposals, however, raises serious questions as to the systemic factors militating in favour or against the development of “hard” global health law and warrants a broader approach that includes soft and informal normative instruments in a normative strategy for global health.
