In this chapter, Pierre Klein and Vaios Koutroulis open the discussion on the impact of fundamental principles of international law on territorial disputes and focus on the principle of the prohibition of the use of force in international relations. Starting from the UN Charter prohibition of the use of force in international relations, and of the acquisition of territorial sovereignty through threat or the use of force, the authors discuss the legal regime applicable to the use of force in disputed territories, especially the inherent right of self-defence.
