Abstract/Description:

This chapter seeks to push Engel’s writing on the Earth Charter into a sphere of moral concern it has yet to fully address: the intrinsic values of animals and the kind of urgent moral obligations we have to them at this critical historical juncture of our shared social and evolutionary existence. It contends that this is a blind spot generally shared by most global ethics, governance and institutional initiatives, including the Earth Charter. Yet Engel’s covenantal ethics offers a promising avenue for addressing precisely this lacuna.
