Crimes (Penalties) Amendment Bill 2011
A Bill for
An Act to amend the Crimes Act 1900
The Legislative Assembly for the Australian Capital Territory enacts as
follows:
This Act is the Crimes (Penalties) Amendment Act 2011.
This Act commences on the day after its notification day.
Note The naming and commencement provisions automatically commence on the notification day (see Legislation Act, s 75 (1)).
This Act amends the Crimes Act 1900.
The object of this Act is to increase the maximum penalty applying to offences of manslaughter and culpable driving—
(a) based on—
(i) community standards and expectations about the appropriate penalty for each offence; and
(ii) the seriousness with which the offences are viewed by the Legislative Assembly; and
(b) to ensure the maximum penalty for each offence is similar to the maximum penalty for corresponding offences in other Australian jurisdictions.
