LEGAL AID COMMISSION AMENDMENT BILL 2016 BILL 32 OF 2016

                            CLAUSE NOTES

            Legal Aid Commission Amendment Bill 2016

Clause 1:   Provides for the short title of the Bill.

Clause 2:   Provides that the Act commences on Royal Assent.

Clause 3:   Provides that the Principal Act is the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990.

Clause 4:   Amends section 5 of the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 by reducing the
            membership of the Legal Aid Board from 10 to 5 members, and
            provides for the qualifications required for appointment as a member of
            the Legal Aid Board.

Clause 5:   Amends section 16 of the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 by removing
            the requirement that applications for legal aid must be in writing.

Clause 6:   Inserts a section into the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 that provides
            that savings and transitional provisions have effect.

Clause 7:   Amends Schedule 2 to the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 by reducing
            the number of members needed to require the Chairperson to convene
            a meeting of the Legal Aid Board from 3 to 2, and further by reducing
            the number of members required for a quorum from 5 to 3.

Clause 8:   Amends the Legal Aid Commission Act 1990 by inserting a new Schedule
            to the Act that provides for savings and transitional provisions regarding
            the membership of the Legal Aid Board.

Clause 9:   Repeals the Act one year from the date on which it commences.
