Functions of the Council

162F. Functions of the Council



(1) The functions of the Council are-



   (a)  to conduct study, research and analysis into the incidence and causes
        of maternal deaths, still-births and the deaths of children in
        Victoria who die aged less than 18 years of age and to collect
        information (including personal information and health information)
        for this purpose;

   (b)  to conduct a perinatal data collection unit for the purpose of-

   (i)  collecting, studying, researching and interpreting information on and
        in relation to births in Victoria;

   (ii) identifying and monitoring trends in respect of perinatal health
        including congenital abnormalities;

   (iii) providing information to the Secretary on the requirements for and
        the planning of neonatal care units;

   (iv) providing information to the medical profession for research into the
        epidemiology of perinatal mortality and disorder including congenital
        abnormalities; and

   (v)  establishing and maintaining a register of congenital abnormalities;

   (c)  to provide information for the education and instruction in medical
        theory and practice in obstetrics and paediatrics for registered
        medical practitioners and nurses;



   (d)  to consider, investigate and report on any other matters in respect of
        obstetric and paediatric mortality and morbidity referred to the
        Council by the Minister or the Secretary; and

   (e)  to publish an annual report of the Council's research and activities.

(2) The Secretary shall make available to the Council the services of such
employees in the Department as are necessary for the purpose of enabling the
Council to carry out its functions.
