The Parliament of Western Australia enacts as follows: page 1 Road Traffic Amendment (Keeping Safe Distances from Bicycles) Bill 2014 s. 1 1 1. Short title 2 This is the Road Traffic Amendment (Keeping Safe Distances 3 from Bicycles) Act 2014. 4 2. Commencement 5 This Act comes into operation as follows -- 6 (a) sections 1 and 2 -- on the day on which this Act 7 receives the Royal Assent (assent day); 8 (b) the rest of the Act -- on the day after the period of one 9 month beginning on assent day. 10 3. Act amended 11 This Act amends the Road Traffic Act 1974. 12 4. Section 63A inserted 13 At the end of Part V Division 1 insert: 14 15 63A. Keeping safe distances from bicycles 16 A driver of a motor vehicle must, while following or 17 passing a person on a bicycle on a road, keep a safe 18 distance, between all parts of the vehicle and all parts 19 of the person and bicycle, of at least -- 20 (a) if the speed limit applicable to the vehicle or 21 the place does not exceed 60 km/h -- 1 metre; 22 (b) otherwise -- 1.5 metres. 23 Penalty: 50 PU. 24 25
