Council Members

The Council comprises 25 members drawn from the Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and wider Australian communities. The Government, the Oppostition and the Australian Democrats in the Commonwealth Parliament are represented among the wider community participants. The third Council was appointed 18 December, 1997.

Chairperson of the Cairns and District Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Corporation for Women, has been involved in Aboriginal affairs for over 30 years and has played an instrumental role in the establishment of Aboriginal Legal Services, Housing Societies and Medical services in Queensland.

Sir Gustav Nossal AC CBE

the former Director of the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, is highly regarded for his research in fundamental immunology. He has an interest in the interface between science and society and a commitment to public health and preventative medicine.


INDIGENOUS MEMBERS

Mr John Abednego

Mr John Abednego

is the Chairperson of the Torres Strait Regional Authority and has worked with the Torres Strait Legal Service and many local community organisations and is committed to advancing the Torres Strait region.

Dr Archie Barton AM

Dr Archie Barton AM

was South Australian Aboriginal of the Year in 1988 and was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1989. He is the Administrator of Maralinga Tjarutja and the Chairman of Maralinga Piling Trust. Dr Barton is returning for his third term on Council.

Mr Kerry Blackman

Mr Kerry Blackman

a Gurang Gurang man, is the Principal Director/Consultant of Indigenous Marketing Pty Ltd. A former ATSIC Commissioner, Mr Blackman is committed to holistic community development and increasing individual, collective and community self worth, dignity and security.

Ms Sadie Canning MBE

Ms Sadie Canning MBE

was one of the Stolen children who grew up at Mount Margaret Mission, and was the first Aboriginal Matron appointed in WA. Ms Canning is a consultant to the Aboriginal Affairs Department in WA and a member of the WA State Reconciliation Committee.

Mr Gatjil Djerrkura OAM

is the Chairman of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and has had a long involvement in Aboriginal enterprise and administration.

Ms Karmi Dunn

Ms Karmi Dunn

a Tiwi woman from Bathurst Island, is the Chairperson of Yilli Rreung Regional Council (Darwin) and the Deputy Chairperson of the Indigenous Housing Authority of the Northern Territory. Ms Dunn worked previously with the Northern Land Council and the Office of Aboriginal Development with the NT Government.

Rev Dr Djiniyini OAM

Rev Dr Djiniyini Gondarra OAM

is the Chairman of the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress and has served a long career in the Methodist and Uniting Churches. Ordained in 1976, Rev Gondarra was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1985.

Ms Sally Goold OAM

Ms Sally Goold OAM

is the Chairperson of the Congress of Aboriginal Nurses and has had a long career in indigenous health and nursing.

Ms Jackie Huggins

Ms Jackie Huggins

is currently the Deputy Director of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit with the University of Queensland. She is a nationally recognised author, historian and speaker and has worked in indigenous employment, health and education. This is her second term on Council.

Mr Bill Lowah

Mr Bill Lowah

originally from Thursday Island, has worked in health and education during a long involvement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. He is currently the Promotions Manager at the Centre for Indigenous Health, Education and Research in Brisbane and returns for his third term on Council.

Ms May L O'Brien BEM

Ms May L O'Brien BEM

is an author, Chair of the Aboriginal Education and Training Council and Deputy Chair of the WA State Reconciliation Committee. In 1977 Ms O'Brien received the British Empire Medal for her service to education, particularly Aboriginal education.

Mr Ray Robinson

Mr Ray Robinson

is the Deputy Chair of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission and President of the National Aboriginal and Islander Legal Services Secretariat. He was a member of the National Aboriginal Conference and the Aboriginal Housing Land Co. Ltd.

Mrs Alma Stackhouse

Mrs Alma Stackhouse OAM

is a founding member of the Flinders Island Aboriginal Community Association and in 1989 was awarded Tasmanian Aboriginal of the year and the Medal of the Order of Australia. She has worked for Aboriginal people at both state and national levels since 1974. Mrs Stackhouse is returning for her third term on Council.

Ms Marjorie Thorpe

Ms Marjorie Thorpe

was formerly the Co-Director and Senior research officer with the Resource Unit for Indigenous Mental Health Education and research, Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne and was the Victorian Co-commissioner to the Stolen Children Inquiry. Ms Thorpe has a long involvement in Aboriginal health, childcare and women's issues and returns to Council for a second term.



WIDER COMMUNITY MEMBERS:

Mr Robert Champion de Crespingy

Mr Robert Champion de Crespigny

is Executive Chairman of Normandy Mining Ltd which he founded in 1985. He is a Fellow of the Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, a Board member of the Business Council of Australia and Chairman of the South Australian Museum. Mr Champion de Crespigny is returning for his third term on Council.

Ms Dimity Fifer

Ms Dimity Fifer

CEO of the Victorian Council of Social Services. With a background in psychology and education, Ms Fifer has specialised in conflict/resolution for 10 years.

Mr Ray martin

Mr Ray Martin

began his distinguished career as a journalist with the ABC in 1965. He is the Chairman of the Fred Hollows Foundation. Former presenter of A Current Affair and currently reporting and producing specials on the nine network. This is Mr Martin's third term on Council.

Mr Daryl Melham MP

Mr Daryl Melham MP

is the Federal Opposition spokesperson on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs and the Opposition's nominee on Council. Before entering Parliament he was a legal aid solicitor and barrister in Sydney.

Mrs Jenny Mitchell OAM

Mrs Jenny Mitchell OAM

is the President of the South Pacific Area of the Associated Country Women of the World and has travelled throughout the South Pacific teaching skills such as leadership and income generating to local women. In 1994 Mrs Mitchell was awarded the Order of Australia Medal.

Hon. Helen Sham Ho MLC

Hon. Helen Sham-Ho MLC

a member of the NSW Legislative Council, is the first Asian born Parliamentarian in Australia and has had a long involvement in community and ethnic affairs. Ms Sham-Ho returns for her third term on Council.

Mr Ian Spicer

Mr Ian Spicer AM

Chairman of the Australian Student Traineeship Foundation, was made a member of the Order of Australia in 1983. He is the former Chief Executive of the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a position he held from 1989-1996 and returns to Council for a third term.

Mrs Sharman Stone MP

Mrs Sharman Stone MP

the Member for Murray, is the Government's representative on Council and is an Anthropologist specialising in Australian Indigenous culture. She has worked with Aboriginal communities in the area of education and with those in custody. Before entering Parliament Mrs Stone was a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Monash University faculty of Economics and Business and Manager of International Development at the University of Melbourne.

Senator John Woodley

Senator John Woodley

is the Australian Democrats spokesperson on Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Affairs and Reconciliation and their representative on Council. Through the Uniting Church Senator Woodley has worked with Aboriginal and Islander people for 35 years.
