National Reconciliation Week Events - Keep the Flame Alive

National Reconciliation Week 2001 will be celebrated in hundreds of events all round Australia, in major cities, in towns, and in small communities. They range from concerts and lectures to picnics, barbecues and prayer services.

Listed here are a small selection of events for which Reconciliation Australia has received specific details, but we know that many other events are planned. Watch your local papers or ring your local council or reconciliation group to find out what's happening in your area.

The Body Shop ‘Flame of Reconciliation’
The Body Shop will launch its ‘Flame of Reconciliation’ candles campaign on Sunday 27 May. The candles will be on sale at all stores of The Body Shop and $2 from each sale will go to Reconciliation Australia.

The Chief Minister will hold an NRW reception.

NORTHERN TERRITORY
Reconciliation Day, Darwin
Reconciliation Day at Sanderson High School, Wulagi, Darwin on Wednesday 30 May from 8 am. There will be music, food, theatre, workshops and a football match all around the themes ‘Building on achievements’ and ‘Responsibilities for the future’.

The Alice Springs Public Library will mount a special reconciliation display during NRW.

NSW
NSW Reconciliation Dinner

Hosted by the NSW Reconciliation Council on June 2, at the Westin hotel, Martin Place, Sydney. Speakers include Mick Dodson, Kim Beazley and the NSW Governor, Marie Bashir.

Bayagul Exhibition
At the Powerhouse Museum, 500 Harris St, Ultimo Sydney, this exhibition of Contemporary Indigenous Communication reveals aspects of Indigenous Australian identities as they are expressed through today’s technologies and industries. Sea of Hands, Coffs Harbour
The Sea of Hands will run throughout the week. Talking circles and a family BBQ will be held on Sunday 27 May.

SATURDAY 30 June, 2001 - Shoalhaven Aboriginal Reconciliation Festival - White Sands Park, Huskisson from 10.00am to 3.00pm - Special Guests, Music, Dance, Bands, Art/Craft/information stalls, jumping castle, face painting, didgeridoo playing - theme is directed towards encouragement and celebration of young people. Dubbo:
DOORWAYS Voluntary Accommodation & Support Service for young people aged
between 16 and 25 years who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Our clientel consists of 50% Aboriginal young people.

VICTORIA
Melbourne Federation Festival
(Organised by Melbourne International Festival of the Arts). Will conclude with a special concert at 8 pm on 27 May at the Melbourne Concert Hall to commemorate the 1967 Referendum. Yothu Yindi will join the Australian Youth Orchestra and soprano Deborah Cheetham in a powerful program including the world premiere of Ceremony.

Also on 27 May, a free celebration of Indigenous music, Beyond Survival, will feature an all-Indigenous line-up Forum Theatre, 154 Flinders St, from 1 pm to 10.30 pm.

Week of Prayer for Reconciliation
Every year since 1993, faith communities have observed the Week of Prayer as a national expression of their commitment to reconciliation. This year the Advisory Group on Faith Communities for Reconciliation have organised a multi-faith conference titled: Spirituality & Reconciliation – Justice, Healing and Belonging on 21–22 May in Geelong, Victoria.

AN ABORIGINAL PERSPECTIVE OF MORIALTA CONSERVATION PARK
A walk in Morialta Conservation Park with Biwi Norman Brusnahan - a man of Kaurna and Ngarrindjeri descent who has trained as a Cultural Educator. It is on the 34th anniversary of the 1967 referendum. Biwi talks about the importance of this area to Kaurna people, and also about the natural environment.

Sunday 27 May, 8.45am - 12noon. Cost: $20 per person, which includes bush foods and refreshments at the completion of the walk. Meet at the car park on Stradbroke Road, just to the west of the Fourth Creek Trail. Bring: water to drink on the walk, wet weather gear, hat, sunscreen.
