Most of that time has been spent keeping up with the rigours of teaching, negotiations, numerous seminars and continual work on the software and hardware that comprise AustLII. Amongst other things, we have been working on the acquisition and construction of new databases, the ability to update cases on a far more regular basis, largely invisible improvements to SINO (our search engine), upgrades to our hardware (see below) and maintenance of a very very large web site. Thanks for your support! Geoff, Andrew, Graham, Philip ------------------------------ AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY SUPREME COURT http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/cases/act/supreme_ct/ AustLII thanks the Chief Justice and Registrar of the ACT Supreme Court, the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department, and David Grainger of SCALE in particular, and the Law Foundation of NSW. ------------------------------ AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY LEGISLATION http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/consol_act http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/num_act http://www.austlii.edu.au/au/legis/act/consol_reg AustLII thanks the ACT Attorney-General Gary Humphries, Peter Quinton of the ACT Attorney-General's Department, the Commonwealth Attorney-General's Department, and David Grainger of SCALE in particular, and the Law Foundation of NSW. ------------------------------ HIGH COURT BULLETIN - NUMBER 2 http://www.austlii.edu.au/hca/bulletin/hcab9602.html A new High Court of Australia bulletin, giving details of around 30 cases before the court during the last sittings, has been prepared by the High Court of Australia Library and is now available on AustLII ------------------------------ AustLII HARDWARE UPGRADES With the generous financial assistance of the Law Foundation of New South Wales we have been able to upgrade our main and backup servers to Sun Ultra 1/170 machines ... The first of these machines was brought into service on Thursday 4th of April due to the failure of the boot drive of our main server, austlii.austlii.edu.au. Our primary server is now a Sun Ultra 1/170 with around 20Gb of hard drive storage and 128Mb of RAM. We are running this machine under Solaris 2.5 and our web server is the Netscape Communications Server. Owing to the fact that the building of this machine had not been completed, some small instabilities were evident over Easter. Apologies! It is now running very reliably and users should experience some performance improvements. ------------------------------ AustLII NETWORK UPGRADE 1234567890123456789012345678901234567890123456789012345678901234567890 On the Tuesday following Easter our network link was switched from an unreliable laser link and an old router to a microwave link with a new Cisco router connecting us directly to the University of Technology, Sydney main machine room. This had been a long time coming, but appears to be very stable and we must thank Matt Flanagan of the UTS Information Technology Division for his work on ensuring a clean changeover. ------------------------------ SECONDARY MATERIALS POSITION http://www.austlii.edu.au/austlii/employment.html We are still accepting expressions of interest for a person to take a challenging position creating and managing AustLII's 'secondary' legal materials. We have already received a number of applications. We expect to be able to offer an initial contract position for one year, with prospects for continuation. Funding arrangements are being finalised at present. Responsibilities would include the design, mark-up and management of large collections of secondary legal materials, including the materials of the Australian Human Rights Information Centre (AHRIC), the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, Law Reform Commissions, our index of Australasian Law on the Net, and other secondary legal materials, particularly law reform related. See for AustLII's complete current list. There would be an initial emphasis on creating two new large collections concerning human rights and concerning aboriginal legal issues. See for our 'Reconciliation and Social Justice' database. ------------------------------ UPDATES TO AustLII'S INDEXES - AUSTRALIAN AND INTERNATIONAL http://www.austlii.edu.au/austlii/austral_law.html http://www.austlii.edu.au/international.html We have introduced a 'New items not yet in index' entry at the top of both our indexes, to provide an interim list of interesting new items in between our proper index updates (which take longer!). We suggest you scan the 'New items' when you use these indexes. ------------------------------ MARCH AUSTLII STATS SUMMARY AustLII usage figures continue to grow almost exponentially ... we are now receiving around 20,000 hits per day from around 1300 sites. 320,000 pages of HTML 9,200,000 hypertext links 1.7 GB of indexed raw text 3.5 GB of HTML files 30,501 'sessions' in Mar 424,367 'hits' in Mar 1,457 peak daily users 81 peak concurrent users 24,404 peak daily 'hits' ------------------------------ Please feel free to distribute 'News from AustLII' either electronically or in print form.
